Stevan Jakovljević, biology professor and a participant of the World War I arrives to the 20 year anniversary of the war and the opening of the ossuary monument in the village where he spent time with his first combat unit, the fifth cannon battery.
Stevan took an unexpected leave of absence, later he was transferred, and one of the reasons he arrives to the opening of the ossuary is the desire to find out what had happened to his first war comrades, especially with his direct superior lieutenant Aleksandar. He will meet only the commander, and the fate of the fifth battery that ceased to exist in that very village will open up through their flashbacks, moments of hardship and of joy, as well as the relationship of Aleksandar and Stevan, which grows from initial intolerance into friendship. What Stevan learns from the commander will change everything – Aleksandar took a willing sacrifice for Stevan, risking court martial as well as his life.
In this story on bravery and friendship, the character of sub-lieutenant Aleksandar, whose fate we learn at the very end, will also show how the Serbian army managed to perform all those military feats, despite all hardships – because one man, the lieutenant, the superior, willingly sacrificed his life, his reputation and honour, in order to save at least one of his soldiers.
