László Nemes is a Hungarian film director renowned for his debut feature Son of Saul (2015), a stark Holocaust drama centered on a Sonderkommando prisoner's futile quest for a rabbinical burial amid the horrors of Auschwitz, which earned the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Born in Budapest to a Jewish mother and the theatre director András Jeles, Nemes relocated to Paris at age 12, where he pursued studies in history, international relations, and screenwriting before assisting acclaimed director Béla Tarr on films such as The Man from London (2007).
